After trading away Rafael Devers, the Boston Red Sox’s long-term solution at third base became uncertain. The next in line is marquee free agent signing Alex Bregman, who inked a three-year, $120 million deal during the offseason. Unfortunately for Boston, Bregman holds the keys to his future with an opt-out after the season. However, the former All-Star is not against negotiating a new deal in advance of free agency.
“I always tell the team—and Alex directs me to tell them—we’re always open to any conversation,” his agent, Scott Boras, told Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.“Any player who plays well somewhere, it’s something that’s important for the team and important for the player. It’s an additive.”
Boras did not share a timetable for when extension talks will take place, but he put the ball in Boston’s court.
“Those are questions that only the team can propose,” he said. “I think everybody is focused on the season. But the idea of it is if you have a player playing at a high level where he’s at, that’s important for the team to look at and important for the player to look at.”
Bregman’s willingness to sign a new deal is good news for Red Sox fans after the Devers trade. At a time when Boston’s front office stability is in question, knowing a player of Bregman’s caliber is open to re-signing brings renewed confidence to the team’s direction.
Before suffering a quad injury, Bregman was slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. Although his return has taken longer than anticipated, manager Alex Cora stated he is expecting the former World Series champion back “sooner rather than later.”
