Hyderabad: In what is being seen as a new beginning for the sport, the Telangana Basketball Association (TBA) will organise the inaugural Telangana Pro Basketball League at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Indoor Stadium here from July 3 to 6.

TBA President R Sridhar Reddy informed media on Wednesday that the championship would feature six franchises Hyderabad Hawks, Ranga Reddy Rhinos, Warangal Warriors, Karimnagar Kings, Nizamabad Nawabs and Mahabubnagar Bulls.

“This should usher in a new chapter for basketball in the State, bringing together top talent, dynamic teams, and more importantly, a platform to promote the sport in a big way,” said Sridhar Reddy.

“The pre-season will feature matches showcasing the best of Telangana’s players and aims to boost the sport’s popularity across both urban and rural areas,” the TBA chief added.

TBA General Secretary A Prudhvishwar Reddy highlighted the recent achievements of Telangana’s young players, pointing out that three girls from the State—Netra Birudavolu, Saanvi Kolhishetty, and Viha Reddy—recently represented India at the South Asian Basketball Association Under-16 Girls Qualifiers held in Maldives.

The players were felicitated along with their parents at the event. Sridhar Reddy said he hoped they would go on to represent the country at the senior level as well.

“We are focused on providing the best platforms and the right exposure for young talent to dream big and achieve success at the national and international levels,” he said.

“Our next big target is to finish in the top three at the Nationals in various age groups. The immediate goal is the Junior Nationals to be held in September in Punjab. The best players from the Inter-District (Under-18) Championship in Uttanoor, scheduled from July 11 to 13, will be selected for the same,” Prudhvishwar explained.

He added that the TBA is also preparing for the Sub-Junior Nationals to be held in Uttarakhand in October.
