Hyderabad: A total of 221 individuals, including 173 men, 37 women and 11 children, have been identified in an ongoing special drive by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to relocate the homeless from key locations across the city.
According to officials, 19 of them were shifted to GHMC-managed shelter homes after medical examinations, while the rest were counselled and reunited with their families.
Drive aimed at clearing Basheerbagh, Secretariat, Nampally, Begumbazar, etc.
The GHMC’s Urban Community Development (UCD) wing has intensified efforts over the past few days to address the growing number of beggars and the homeless at major junctions and religious sites. Areas currently under focus include Basheerbagh, Secretariat, Nampally, Begumbazar and other high-traffic points within city limits.
Officials say the presence of the homeless as they beg for money and food in these locations has been causing inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians. In response, the corporation has formed dedicated teams to identify and relocate such individuals as part of its goal to create a more orderly urban environment.
Medical screening and counselling
Every person identified through the drive undergoes a medical check-up before being relocated. Those found fit and without medical complications are either taken to shelter homes or sent back to their families, depending on their circumstances.
The GHMC is working in coordination with the city police to ensure the safe and respectful handling of all individuals involved in the process.
Drive to continue in a phased manner
Officials have confirmed that the operation will continue in a phased and sustained manner, with teams covering more areas in the coming weeks. The aim is to reduce the presence of people living or begging on footpaths by offering shelter, rehabilitation or family support wherever possible.
The civic body emphasised that the initiative is part of a larger effort to promote social welfare while maintaining the city’s public order and cleanliness.
