West Virginia baseball transfer portal tracker

With the regular season over, the transfer portal is heating up around the country, including at West Virginia.

Multiple players have put their name into the portal, which is a database that allows schools to contact them regarding a transfer, and WVSports.com will track it. It’s important to note that because a player is listed in the portal does not mean that they have to transfer out of the program, just that schools can contact them.

Transferred to West Virginia:

Joshua Surigao — LHP

Surigao is a left-handed arm who was a true freshman at Hawaii this past season. While he only appeared in two games, tossing 1.2 total innings, he allowed no runs, while he had four strikeouts, giving up one walk and two hits. Surigao is a South Carolina native and has three years of eligibility remaining.

Michael Smonsa — C

Smonsa is a catcher from the Division III level, where he was one of the best. catchers in the country at that level. This past season, Smonsa was named the 2025 SCAC Player of the Year after batting .439 with seven triples and eight home runs. He is a right-handed hitter with a track record of production.

Dawson Montesa — RHP

Montesa comes to WVU also from the Division II level, like a lot of other WVU transfer additions. Montesa had a sizeable jump from year one to year two at Adelphi University, as he had a 1.99 ERA in 72.1 innings pitched this past season. He also struck out 105 batters, while he only walked 24. He finished the season with a 8-1 record in 11 games started. Montesa is a New York native and was named a Division II All-American this past season.

John Lemm – 100 Lemm joins the Mountaineers from Southern Illinois, where he hit .272 with 19 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 56 runs scored this past season. A left-handed power bat, Lemm struck out just 36 times in 180 at-bats and was ranked the No. 160 overall prospect by 64Analytics. He began his career at South Suburban Community College before transferring to SIU. Lemm is expected to help replace Logan Sauve, who is draft eligible. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound catcher is originally from Australia and has one year of eligibility remaining.

Brock Wills — OF Wills comes to WVU from UNCW, where he batted .351 with six home runs and 22 RBIs across 36 games this past season. A left-handed hitter, he posted a .450 on-base percentage and a .545 slugging percentage — the highest on the team — with 13 of his 47 hits going for extra bases. Wills primarily played outfield and typically batted leadoff, where UNCW went 18-7 in games he topped the order. A Second Team All-CAA selection, Wills spent three seasons at UNCW and has one year of eligibility remaining. He is originally from Holly Springs, North Carolina.

Ian Korn — RHP

Korn was the Division II National Pitcher of the Year this past season, going 11-2 with a 1.81 ERA this year. He allowed just 60 hits in 84.1 innings, struck out 83 batters, and held opponents to a .197 batting average against. Korn is a native of York, Pennsylvania, and will have one year of eligibility remaining. He comes to WVU from Seton Hill and started 13 games this past season.

Matt Ineich — INF

Ineich was a true freshman at Ohio this past season where he hit .387 with three home runs and 25 RBIs. He played in only 36 games, while he started all of them, primarily playing second base. Ineich is a Michigan native and only had 11 strikeouts all season. He was second in the MAC in batting average, and his .467 on-base percentage was among the best in the conference as well. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Owen Puk — RHP

Puk was a redshirt junior this past season, making 13 appearances on the mound for Florida International. He struck out 51 batters over 40.1 innings while holding opponents to a .224 batting average. His fastball reaches the upper 90s, and he had a 4-1 record with a 4.91 ERA this past season. His brother AJ Puk, is a current pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Chansen Cole — RHP

Cole was a freshman at Newberry College this past season, a Division II school. He pitched just under 90 innings this year, finishing with 97 strikeouts and 21 walks. He is a native of South Carolina, and he pitched at least 5.0 innings in all of his 14 starts except for one.

He had a 15-strikeout game in a six-inning performance back in February this season. He also allowed only seven home runs all season.

Paul Schoenfeld — OF

Schoenfeld is an outfielder from the Division II ranks, playing at Colorado Mesa University. He is an outfielder who started 56 games this season. In those games, he had 94 hits, not recording a hit in only four games. He hit .420 on the season and had nine home runs and 19 stolen bases to go with 55 runs batted in.

He started his career in the junior college ranks, attending Butler Community College. He has spent three seasons at Colorado Mesa, and has hit above .400 in each of the last two seasons.

Transferred from West Virginia:

Ben Hudson — RHP

Hudson was a true freshman this past season, appearing in 18 games, while he made one start. He finished the season with 30 strikeouts and a 3.95 ERA in 27.1 innings pitched this season. Hudson’s best outing came against Pitt, where he tossed 5.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Hudson is a New Jersey native.

Cole Fehrman — LHP

Fehrman was a junior left-handed pitcher who appeared in 14 games and was heavily used down the stretch of the season for the Mountaineers. He had a 13.50 ERA this season, tossing 6.2 innings. He threw 13.0 total innings in 26 total appearances as a Mountaineer.

Ellis Garcia — INF

Garcia spent three seasons at WVU, playing in 127 total games, while he started 75. His time on the field was reduced in a major way this year, as he did not record a single start. He hit .222 this season with four RBIs, while he only totaled 32 at-bats. Garcia is a native of New Jersey, starting 45 games in 2023, and 30 games last season.

Spencer Barnett — INF

Barnett is a native of Pittsburgh and he started in 28 games this past season. He hit .278 this past season with four home runs and 26 RBIs. He was able to man multiple infield positions, and he played in 91 total games as a Mountaineer.

Chase Swain — UTL

Swain bounced in and out of the lineup this season, while he ended up finding a bench role later in the season. He played in 49 games, starting 39 of them for the Mountaineers. He hit .321 with 30 RBIs this season. Swain transferred to WVU from Manhattan prior to the start of last season.

Gavin Van Kempen – RHP

Van Kempen announced he will be entering the portal with one year of eligibility remaining. Van Kempen played in 14 games this season, starting 13 of them. He finished with a 6.13 ERA in 39.2 innings pitched this year.

Van Kempen had spent three total seasons at WVU, working his way into the weekend rotation this year before he dealt with an injury towards the end of the season. Van Kempen had 26 walks and 37 strikeouts this season.

Jorge Valdes — OF

Valdes was a freshman this past season, mostly being utilized in different roles off the bench. He played in 38 total games this season, including two of the three games during WVU’s regional run.

Valdes is entering before West Virginia travels to face LSU in the Super Regionals. He hit .158 in 19 at-bats this season, coming on late in games for his speed and defensive ability. He is originally from Canada, and he bats from the left side. The decision for Valdes to enter the portal was confirmed to WVSports.Com.

Michael Perazza — OF

Perazza was a sophomore at WVU this past season, playing in 21 games and starting 10 of them. He is a left-handed bat, hitting .233 this season with one home run, five RBIs, and six runs scored this season.

Perazza also started 15 games for the Mountaineers last season and is a Florida native.

Alex Marot – Inf/utl

Marot was a redshirt-freshman this past season, after he did not play in 2024. This season, he started six games, appearing in 17 total. He hit .273 with six RBIs and four runs scored. He is from Rhode Island originally.

Aiden Cody — RHP

Cody was a freshman this past season, but redshirted for medical reasons, having surgery in February. He did not play in a game for WVU, and is a right-handed pitcher from New Jersey. Perfect Game ranked him the 22nd-best player in the state when he was a senior in high school.

Carlos Caraballo— RHP

Caraballo is a right-handed pitcher from Pennsylvania, and he was a freshman at WVU this past season. He did not appear in a game, who was ranked the 28th-best player overall in the state of Pennsylvania by Perfect Game in the Class of 2024.

Joe Fredericks — LHP

Fredericks was a sophomore pitcher at WVU this past season, who has two years of eligibility remaining. In 2024, he appeared in 18 games, tossing 16.0 total innings. This past season, he made four appearances, tossing 2.0 total innings. Fredericks is a native of Virginia.

Aidan Smith — RHP

Smith has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, but is not yet listed in the transfer portal database. Smith is a right-handed pitcher from Maryland who was a sophomore this past season. In two seasons, he appeared in four total games, including one appearance this season.
