Skoda and Volkswagen are set to join the hybrid segment in the Indian market. According to a fresh media report, both carmakers are planning to introduce hybrid midsize SUVs and sedans by 2028. The Skoda and VW hybrid cars are currently in the initial development stage; therefore, detailed product information is not available at this point. What we know so far is that the European automaker will use the IMP (India Main Platform) for their hybrid models.
IMP Platform for Skoda, VW Hybrid Cars
The IMP architecture is essentially a derivative of the CMP (China Main Platform), featuring heavily localised components. This will help the carmakers reduce manufacturing costs and comply with CAFÉ 3 regulations in India. The IMP platform will also underpin the upcoming Skoda and Volkswagen electric SUVs.

Skoda, VW Hybrid Cars Competitions
The Indian midsize SUV segment currently has two hybrid offerings – the Maruti Grand Vitara and the Toyota Hyryder. In the coming years, there will be multiple new models are expected from Hyundai, Kia, Renault and Nissan. While Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos will receive hybrid powertrain with their next-generation updates in 2027 and 2026, respectively, the new Renault Duster and its rebadged version from Nissan will debut in 2026. These upcoming midsize hybrid SUVs will compete with the upcoming Skoda and Volkswagen hybrid SUVs.
In the sedan segment, Honda currently offers the City e:HEV, equipped with a 1.5L, 4-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine, paired with two electric motors. It will challenge the upcoming hybrid sedans from Skoda and Volkswagen.
Skoda Octavia RS Coming This Year
Meanwhile, the Czech automaker is gearing up to launch the performance-oriented Skoda Octavia RS as a full import unit. Limited units will be brought in, with an estimated price of around Rs 50 lakh. It will be the fourth-generation of the performance sedan, featuring a 265bhp, 2.0L turbo petrol engine.
