Flew the Delhi-Melbourne sector with Air India: 7 quick observations

The cabin crew was young & extremely polite.

BHPian SS-Traveller recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

We flew Delhi-Melbourne on Air India, and here’s what we got:

1. The food quality has improved from the days of veg biryani or chicken biryani to this…

…but some of the stuff, especially the bun and the joke that was labelled as pasta, were inedible. Food on the return journey is usually better, and I’ll report about it here shortly in another post

2. The in-flight infotainment system wasn’t working, showing this message every time anyone tried to play a movie…

Of course, broken buttons and a non-functional remote were to be expected, so the overhead light and assistance call buttons were not working either. That precluded my reading a book. Mercifully, I had been warned earlier, so there was a selection of movies on my phone too, and I ended up binge-watching 4 of them in the duration of 12+ hours. Didn’t get to sleep at all because of the turbulence and because the seat would only tilt partially. The wife’s seat wasn’t tilting at all, but finally did after using some force – mine wasn’t so understanding (the seat, not the wife).

3. Interestingly, the rather unique electrochromic windows of the B787 aircraft refused to un-dim themselves via the buttons next to each window, so we sat in darkness for nearly 10 hours while the sun appeared like the moon in the sky outside. A couple of hours before landing, most of the windows cleared up centrally, though some did not.

4. The toilets were clean to begin with, but our civic sense got the better of us, and folks managed to clog up at least one toilet and washbasin with tissues & God knows what else.

5. The cabin crew was young & extremely polite. Chatted with the supervisor, a lady called Ranjeet Kaur, who was flying to Australia for the first time. She used to work for Vistara earlier. At the hotel where the crew put up for the night, the restaurant staff paid some special attention to her and her crew’s breakfast requirements the next day, thanks to our daughter putting in a request with the front-of-house staff.

6. The selection of drinks on offer onboard was more extensive than what I’d seen ealier. I’ll desist from discussing this further, so as not to violate forum rules.

7. We managed to forget a couple of neck pillows on board the aircraft. A lady forgot her phone. Unfortunately, they weren’t found subsequently. Don’t know whether this has to do with Air India staff or the Tullamarine airport cleaning crew. Note to self: triple check your possessions before debarding.
