When the Milwaukee Brewers made the trade for Quinn Priester back on April 7th, sending Yophery Rodriguez, their top outfield prospect, pitcher John Holobetz, and the 33rd overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft to the Red Sox, the Brewers were in a delicate spot.

To that point, Priester had a career 6.23 ERA and the Brewers were desperate for starting pitching help. Priester had talent as a former first round pick, but had yet to put it all together. Despite that, the Brewers identified Priester, acquired him, and plugged him into their rotation.

Through some hiccups, Priester has taken some remarkable steps in his development.

The latest start from Priester was his best one yet, going seven shutout innings against the Rockies, allowing just one hit and striking out 11. He lowered his season ERA to 3.35.

Things did not start out this rosy for Priester and the Brewers.

“When I saw him in Colorado, I’m like, ugh this is a project. And then when I saw him again the next time he pitched, I’m like ugh this is a project.” manager Pat Murphy said.

On his May 2nd start against the Cubs, he allowed seven runs in what ended up being a 10-0 blowout loss to the division rival. His ERA was sitting at 5.79. After that game, Murphy said despite the poor outing, there were some positives he drew from it for Priester.

Ever since that start, Priester has a 2.30 ERA in 54.2 IP with 44 strikeouts to 12 walks.

“I credit the kid more than anyone but our pitching staff, pitching coaches, and the players on the staff that have embraced this guy and allowed him to grow, they’ve done an unbelievable job and now see his confidence” Murphy said.

What’s most remarkable about this development and improvement in Priester is the fact that he’s doing it mid-season at the big league level. The Brewers have given him that opportunity and he’s rewarded them for it.

“That’s the kicker, I would not have done that. My decision would have been let him go to Triple-A and work this stuff out. He’s done it here at the big league level” Murphy added.

“Being consistent, it’s very easy to trust the process we’ve developed over the past two months and the things that we’ve worked on to be as consistent as we’ve been being” Priester said.

The trade that was much maligned when it was first made is now looking a whole lot better for the Brewers as Priester has developed into a key piece in this Brewers rotation that suddenly is hot on the heels of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central race. There’s still a lot more time for things to play out, but Priester’s development on the fly has been nothing short of remarkable, it just does not happen all the time like this.
