Hyderabad: Amid resentment and protests, the Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Monday demolished encroachments on the shore area of the Sunnam Cheruvu.

The building owners decried the demolitions saying the HYDRAA action as violating their rights. The demolitions came days after the Pollution Control Board report was used by the Hydraa to claim water contamination in Sunnam Cheruvu.

Amid police protection, the HYDRAA authorities started the demolition in the early hours. Over 50 to 70 temporary shelters, water sumps, and bore wells installed on the shore area of Sunnam Cheruvu were demolished.

Last week, a few private individuals held a protest at Sunnam Cheruvu, claiming they had documents for plots allotted to them at Cheruvu.

On Monday morning, plot owners condemned the demolitions, and said that despite court orders, HYDRAA was demolishing their boundaries. Sunnam Cheruvu spans 32.60 acres between Guttal Begumpet and Allapur villages, on the border of Serilingampally and Kukatpally mandals.
