Squid Game is one of the most popular survival drama in OTT Web-Series history. The first season created such a huge sensation that everyone wanted the makers to bring many seasons. But the second season did not attain similar success upon release. But with a promise to improve and close the arc of main characters, makers have released third season. Interestingly, Netflix did not give it similar promotional pump like previous seasons. Let’s discuss about it in detail.

Plot:

The season continues post the failure of the rebellion of players from the second season. Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) survives and he wants to rise another rebellion and end these games. His plotting against the mighty billionaires who are conducting these games. How successful he is in this aspect and what he tried to achieve? Watch the season 3 to know more.

Analysis:

While the games with their quality in horror found a huge fanbase, they could not really write a water-tight screenplay for the conclusion. The story keeps going to different lengths without real stakes. The narrative also falls short of the tightness and intrigue of the first season. The second season has already showcased drop in quality and third season is further drop in quality.

Each scene feels like a drag on from the first one rather than being completely imaginative. The kind of horror Squid Game could create in the first season made it such a great viewing that it became an experience that can re-lived again and again. But the third one keeps dragging on with low stakes. The main character arc needed even better continuation but writers took some unimaginative choices throughout.

Lee Jung-jae did a good job as a performer but the writing did not support him as much as it should have. The twists and death feel like twists for the sake of it rather than being done organically. Overall, the season feels an underwhelming conclusion that too rushed out due to lack of interest and imagination from the writers. Maybe it should just have ended in the first season.

Bottomline:

An underwhelming conclusion to a sensational series.

Rating: 2/5
