The Toyota Aqua hybrid hatchback was recently caught test in India. While the Japanese automaker has no plan to launch it here, the test mule is likely being used to evaluate the feasibility of the strong hybrid powertrain. The spotted model is the second-generation Aqua, which was introduced in 2021. It’s primarily a Japan-specific product with occasional global exports.

Based on the TNGA-B platform, the Toyota Aqua features a 1.5L, 3-cylinder DOHC petrol engine (91PS/120Nm), paired with an electric motor that’s good enough for 80PS and 141Nm. The combined power output stands at 116PS. Interestingly, the Aqua is the world’s first production car to feature Bipolar Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery pack, which is placed under the rear seats.
The hatchback has an electronically controlled CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox. A FWD (front-wheel drive) system comes as standard, while E-Four (electric 4WD) is offered as an option. This hybrid hatchback offers a claimed mileage of 35.8kmpl.

The hatchback has a Smart cockpit design with a floating center console, a 10.5-inch infotainment system and a 7-inch TFT MID. The infotainment unit support Toyota SmartDeviceLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity along with a built-in navigation. The hatch also comes with fabric and synthetic leather upholstery along with features such as wireless charging pad, automatic climate control, rear seat recline, 6-speaker audio system, USB-C ports for front and rear passengers and more.
In terms of safety, the Toyota Aqua hybrid offers 10 airbags, a 360-degree camera, vehicle stability control, hill start assist control, ABS with EBD and brake assist, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, rear sign assist, automatic high beam, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, adaptive cruise control and pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
