India is currently grappling with the disruptive impact of powerful monsoon storms that have severely affected air travel across its southern region. On Tuesday night, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport experienced a wave of flight diversions due to intense rainfall, low visibility, and gusty winds. Flights arriving from major cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Lucknow were forced to land at alternative airports including Bengaluru and Vijayawada. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad and neighboring districts, forecasting continued rainfall and advising caution for travelers. As a result, widespread travel chaos unfolded, with both air operations and local infrastructure facing significant strain until weather conditions improved by Wednesday morning.
Hyderabad Flights Diverted Amid Adverse Weather, Operations Resume Following IMD Alert
Unfavorable weather conditions at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday night disrupted air traffic, forcing multiple incoming flights to divert to alternative destinations across southern India. Low visibility, coupled with heavy rainfall and gusty winds, led to temporary operational hurdles that were later resolved as weather conditions improved.
Several flights en route to Hyderabad from major Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata, and Lucknow, faced turbulence in landing schedules due to persistent rainfall and poor runway visibility. These diversions impacted passengers and air traffic operations late into the night.
Flight Diversions and Alternate Landings
IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, bore the brunt of the weather-related disruptions. Several of its flights were rerouted:
- Flight 6E 638 from Bengaluru was diverted to Vijayawada Gannavaram Airport in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
- Kolkata-Hyderabad service 6E 6528 was redirected to Bengaluru due to challenging weather over Hyderabad airspace.
- IndiGo flight 6E 6166 operating from Lucknow also landed in Bengaluru, as did flight 6E 471 from Jaipur.
- Another crucial Mumbai-Hyderabad route, flight 6E 5326, was diverted to Bengaluru for the same reasons.
Airport authorities confirmed that all rerouted flights returned and landed safely at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport once visibility improved and weather conditions stabilized by Wednesday morning.
Rain Batters Hyderabad and Surrounding Regions
Greater Hyderabad and neighboring districts in Telangana have been experiencing steady rainfall since Tuesday night. The continuous showers not only impacted air travel but also led to disruptions across the city. Residents across multiple neighborhoods in Hyderabad experienced sluggish traffic flow and significant water accumulation in low-lying zones.
In response to the prevailing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad and other areas falling under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The alert warns of light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds with speeds ranging from thirty to forty kilometers per hour.
The IMD also predicts light to moderate rain or thunderstorms across multiple regions of Telangana throughout the day on Wednesday, further advising caution for travelers and local residents.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Telangana Districts
While Hyderabad witnessed disrupted air operations, other districts in Telangana may experience more intense weather activity. The India Meteorological Department has indicated a strong possibility of intense rainfall occurring at scattered spots across the following districts:
- Adilabad
- Komaram Bheem Asifabad
- Mancherial
- Jayashankar Bhupalapally
- Mulugu
- Bhadradri Kothagudem
The IMD bulletin warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in many of these regions, along with strong surface winds blowing at thirty to forty kilometers per hour, particularly in isolated pockets.
Officials are urging people living in these districts to stay vigilant, particularly in areas susceptible to flooding or situated at lower elevations. Emergency response teams have been mobilized and are on high alert to act promptly in case of weather-related emergencies.
India is facing major travel disruptions as powerful monsoon storms forced multiple Hyderabad-bound flights to divert, prompting IMD alerts and widespread weather-related chaos across the southern region.
Return to Normalcy at Hyderabad Airport
By Wednesday morning, weather conditions improved sufficiently to resume regular flight operations at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. All previously diverted flights were successfully accommodated, and the backlog in air traffic was cleared, according to sources familiar with the airport’s control tower.
Travelers planning to fly in or out of Hyderabad have been encouraged to check flight statuses in advance, given the ongoing weather alerts. Airline operators continue to monitor weather patterns closely and are maintaining coordination with airport authorities and the IMD to manage further weather-related disruptions, should they arise.
As Telangana moves through its monsoon season, both travelers and residents are being urged to stay updated on meteorological advisories and exercise caution in areas prone to sudden weather changes. With more rain forecast over the next few days, infrastructure resilience and preparedness will remain key to minimizing impact across transport and public services.
