‘Try before you hire’ trend grows as 50% internships turn into job offers; rigorous selection process by GCCs

HYDERABAD: Internships are increasingly enabling young people to secure jobs at Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and startups, with many of these organisations adopting a ‘try before you hire’ approach to assess potential fulltime recruits.According to the latest NASSCOM report, GCCs are employing a rigorous selection process that evaluates not only a candidate’s understanding of core programming principles and emerging technologies but also crucial soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Startups, meanwhile, are offering interns the chance to work on real-world projects, allowing them to evaluate candidates more effectively.“At least 50% of internships are being converted into job offers. In fact, a couple of our students secured packages worth 35 lakh after completing a six-month internship with one of the world’s top IT companies,” said J Upendar from the University College of Engineering, Osmania University. The report also stated that many students are now undertaking six-month or even year-long internships during their studies, often working on live projects. Training and Placement Officers (TPOs) added that numerous colleges are advising students to opt only for paid internships.“I’ve just started a six month internship. I’ll be working on MERN stack—a JavaScript-based framework for developing full-stack web applications. Based on my performance, I’ll most likely receive a job offer,” said Devarakonda Hemanth, a final-year BTech-IT student.
