Blue Jays React to MLB’s George Springer Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Toronto Blue Jays are the hottest team in baseball, and veteran outfielder George Springer is one of the main reasons why. The 35-year-old is slashing .462/.517/.1.038 with five homers and 13 RBI over six games in July thus far, and the Blue Jays are on an eight-game winning streak.
Toronto signed Springer to a six-year, $150 million contract in January 2021. The 6-foot-1-inch, 220-pounder then hit at least .258 over the next three seasons before plunging to .220 last year. However, he’s at .281 for this season entering Monday night’s bout with the Chicago White Sox.
The Blue Jays reacted to MLB’s announcement about Springer via their social media.
“NO SURPRISE HERE. George Springer is your American League Player of the Week!” they said.
The four-time All-Star recorded a .429 average with a 1.464 OPS and 302 wRC+ from June 30-July 6.

Springer won the World Series MVP award with the Houston Astros in 2017. He tied the record for the most homers in a single World Series with five, and the Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. He also homered in the final four games, which set a World Series record for consecutive contests with a homer.
The Blue Jays are three games ahead of the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East. Right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios (4-3, 3.64 ERA) will start for Toronto against Chicago right-hander Sean Burke (4-7, 4.03 ERA) at Rate Field on Monday night.
