CM Revanth Reddy urges Centre to ensure timely, adequate supply of urea

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy with Union Minister J.P. Nadda in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy urged the Union Government to ensure timely and adequate supply of urea to meet the State’s agricultural needs in the ongoing monsoon, as there was a short supply of urea from the Centre.

He made the appeal during his meeting with Union Minister for Fertilizers and Chemicals J.P. Nadda at the latter’s residence in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Only 3.07L metric tonnes of urea

Expressing concern over the shortage in urea supply, the Chief Minister informed the Union Minister that Telangana received only 3.07 lakh metric tonnes of urea between April and June, falling significantly short of the 5 lakh metric tonnes required during the peak sowing season.

With water reaching the irrigation projects due to heavy rains in the catchment areas and cultivation in full swing across the State, he said that any further disruption in fertilizer supply could seriously affect farmers.

Highlighting the requirements for the month of July, the Chief Minister said that the Centre had allocated 63,000 metric tonnes of domestically produced urea and 97,000 metric tonnes of imported urea for this month. However, as of now, only 29,000 metric tonnes have been supplied to Telangana.

Increase quota

He requested that the quota of domestically produced urea be increased to prevent further shortages in TG. He also raised concerns over inadequate allocation of railway rakes for transporting urea to the State and appealed for an increase in their number to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Adviser to State Government A.P. Jitender Reddy, MPs Mallu Ravi and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Special Secretary to CM Ajith Reddy, Agriculture Secretary Raghunandan Rao, and Central schemes coordination Secretary Gaurav Uppal were also present.

Later, the CM’s delegation met Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal.
