Vijayawada: The family of Mandepudi Sesharatnam, a 63-year-old resident of Nidmaru in Guntur district, gave new hope to others by donating her organs after she was declared brain stem dead at AIIMS Mangalagiri. Sesharatnam was admitted to the hospital on July 1 following a road accident and was declared brain stem dead in the early hours of Tuesday.According to AIIMS Mangalagiri authorities, the accident victim was admitted to AIIMS hospital on July 1 after she met with a road accident and was declared brain stem dead in the early hours of July 8 while undergoing treatment at the hospital. “With the consent of the family and in close coordination with Jeevandan Trust, the process of organ retrieval was promptly initiated. Liver, two kidneys, and corneas were allocated for transplantation,” the hospital authorities said.During the late hours of July 8, the AIIMS successfully performed a second cadaver kidney transplant. The other kidney was allocated to Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Foundation, Vijayawada. The liver was transported to Manipal Hospital, Tadepalli, and the corneas were collected by LV Prasad Eye Bank, Vijayawada. All organ retrieval and transplantation procedures were carried out strictly adhering to national medical, regulatory, and ethical standards, the AIIMS Mangalagiri authorities stated.In recognition of the selfless act, dean (academics), medical superintendent, joint medical superintendent, faculty, and AIIMS staff, along with the Guntur district officials, additional DMHO Dr Erugula Annapurna, and other officials paid tribute to the donor and her family at AIIMS Mangalagiri on Wednesday.
