SRK or Aamir for Biopic?

Guru Dutt is one of the most influential figures in Bollywood. From Kaagaz Ke Phool to Pyaasa, Chaudhvin Ka Chand to Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, his distinctive style and thematic depth are still celebrated by audiences and critics alike.

Today marks the 100th birth anniversary of Guru Dutt, and even 60 years after his passing, people continue to talk about his work and contributions to Indian cinema.

A film about his life might not capture it all, but if such a story were ever to be made, one of our biggest stars has already shown interest in playing his role.

Back in 2016, a journalist tweeted that if a Guru Dutt biopic were ever made, only Imtiaz Ali or Mani Ratnam could do justice to the legend’s life.
Tagging Shah Rukh Khan, he added that SRK would be the perfect casting choice as no one else could portray the anger, romance, and devastation of Guru Dutt’s characters like him.

To this, Shah Rukh Khan himself replied that he would be interested in playing the role. He also agreed with the journalist’s poetic observation that “his face is like poetry in black and white.”

Soon after, in another interview, when SRK was asked which actor’s biopic he’d like to be a part of, he replied Guru Dutt.

On the other hand, Aamir Khan got a golden opportunity to step into Guru Dutt’s shoes, albeit for a photoshoot.

He and Katrina Kaif recreated the iconic Pyaasa (1957) pose of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman, which led to speculation that the two were remaking the classic tragic saga.

However, it was later revealed that the shoot was for a magazine cover.

When several industry insiders praised the photograph, talks of a biopic surfaced again.

Reportedly, Anurag Kashyap had written a script on Guru Dutt’s life, and the film was to be directed by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.

Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the project was shelved.

Even today, playing an unforgettable icon like Guru Dutt remains one of the greatest challenges and an even greater responsibility.

If a Guru Dutt biopic were to be made today, who would you like to see play the star who changed Indian cinema forever?
