Hyderabad has more than 200 high-rise buildings and an additional 250 such structures, towering 100 meters and above in height, are under various stages of construction, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said on Friday.

The Minister, who was inaugurating a two-day national conference of the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (Hyderabad Center), said this while stressing the importance of a responsible and environmentally conscious approach to construction amid the urban vertical expansion happening in all major cities in the country.

Telangana is not merely speaking of innovation; it is implementing it. “We are actively promoting adoption of composite steel structures to build a sustainable future for the next generations. The steel bridges made accessible to city residents stand as a testament to this vision,” he told the conference on ‘Next-gen high-rise buildings – advancements in composite and steel structures’.

Advocating for replacing traditional reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structures with composite and steel structures for high-rise developments, Mr. Sridhar said the use of composite steel structures can reduce construction time by 40%, decrease structural weight by 30% and offer superior resistance to seismic activities. Additionally, they minimise pollution during construction and promote circular economy principles through recyclability.

The construction sector in Telangana registered an impressive 11.97% growth rate in 2024–25, contributing more than Rs. 80,000 crore to the State economy, accounting for 24.9% of the gross value added in the services sector.

Eco-friendly construction practices present viable solutions to pressing global challenges of climate change, urbanisation, pollution, and rising carbon emissions. He emphasised the Telangana government’s strategic focus in this direction and appealed to civil engineers to actively participate in this transformative journey, a release from the Minister’s office said. The State government is pursuing an ambitious goal of handing over 5 lakh Indiramma houses to eligible beneficiaries within three and a half years.
