B. Saroja Devi Passed Away at Her Residence, Today in Bengaluru. She was 87 years old and worked in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada languages. She was revered as hit pair with mg ramachandran in Tamil. With NTR, she appeared in classics like Jagadeeka Veeruni Katha, Bhookailas, Dagudu Muthalu, Daana Veera Sura Karna.
She appeared with ANR in Atmabalam, Sri Krisharjuna Yuddham and several others. Her Anbe Vaa with MGR became a cult classic in romances. She appeared in lead roles in 161 films for 29 years between 1955-1984 and this is a rare record for any actress in South Indian Cinema. Her beauty captivated many audiences in many films.
Saroja Devi has been revered as glamorous beauty in South Indian Cinema due to her stunning looks and boldness for those times in wearing western dresses. While she never really take over Telugu Cinema as Savitri, Jamuna were preferred, she got many memorable roles that stay with audiences.
Chitapata Chinukulu song from Atmabalam became her most popular classic and in a way, it became first Telugu rain song which made it a norm in later films. She got Padma Shri in 1969 and Padma Bhushan in 1992 from Indian Government. Even though she hailed from Karnataka, she dubbed for her in all languages she acted in, showcasing her dedication to sound authentic.
Saroja Devi will be missed, not just by her family but Indian Cinema, as she changed the perception of heroines being either glam dolls or heavy melodrama queens to being sweet, cute, bold, clever, glamorous, talented and independent.
