Legendary actress B. Saroja Devi, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars of the 1950s and ’60s, passed away on Monday in Bengaluru after a prolonged illness. She was 87.

Born in Mysuru in 1938, Saroja Devi began her film career in Kannada cinema with Mahakavi Kalidasa, which catapulted her to fame. She quickly rose to pan-South Indian stardom, acting alongside some of the biggest legends of the era, including Dilip Kumar, Rajkumar, N.T. Rama Rao, M.G. Ramachandran, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao.

Notably, she and MGR had delivered 26 super hit films, a record.

For her immense contribution to Indian cinema, she was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
