Warangal: Tension prevailed at Kakatiya University on Wednesday as some student organisations supported, and others strongly opposed, the university’s decision to allocate 15 acres of its land for the establishment of the “Young India Integrated School.”
Student unions split into two factions: one in favour of the integrated school on campus, and the other against it. Supporters, including AIYF, PDSU, Girijana Shakti, TGVP, TSF, and BSF, praised the decision as commendable. They argued that the new school would offer international standard education to students from underprivileged and middle class families, and they accused opposing unions of harbouring political motives to thwart progress.
The pro-school delegation submitted a memorandum to vice chancellor Prof. K. Pratap Reddy, urging him to begin construction without delay. In contrast, unions such as SFI, BRSV, AIFDS, DSA, SSU, and AIDSO have been staging protests in recent days. On Wednesday, these groups held a symbolic funeral march, from the Humanities department to the administrative building, where they burned an effigy representing university authorities.
They demanded that the governing council withdraw its approval for the project, arguing that allocating university land to a private school would commodify education and divert state resources. While acknowledging the merits of an integrated school, they maintained that its placement on university grounds would hinder future campus development.
Student leaders insisted on rescinding the decision, warning that, without reversal, they would escalate their protests, in concert with additional unions, to safeguard university land.
