Hyderabad: Heavy rainfall lashed the city and suburbs on Friday disrupting normal life and throwing traffic out of gear along major road stretches.

The intense and widespread rainfall left the roads completely water-logged, low-lying areas inundated and water gushing into the cellars in commercial complexes and residential apartments.

Pedestrians precariously waded through knee-deep water at several places, bikers struggled to find their way out and cars spluttered to move ahead in the inundated stretches. In some places, worried commuters had to negotiate their way out of waist-level rain water.

Internal roads in residential clusters too were affected with rain water entering houses in several places. As the rains remained incessant without any let up for long hours, heavy inflows were reported at Bathukamma kunta while at Musi, the rain water on the Moosarambagh bridge caused severe inconvenience to motorists.

Water pooled at Gayatrinagar in Ameerpet resembling a swimming pool while an auto-rickshaw was seen getting dragged by the swirling waters at Nacharam Bhavaninagar nala.

Heavy traffic jams resulted in vehicles moving at snail’s pace at Gachibowli, Madhapur, Lakdi-ka-pul, Raidurg, Miyapur, Kukatpally, Tarnaka, LB Nagar and Uppal. A similar scene was replayed along the outskirts with connecting roads jammed with slow moving vehicular traffic. School students in Secunderabad faced hardships in stepping out of their school premises and take waiting autos to reach their homes. There were reports of some vehicles being carried away by the rising rain water at Jeedimetla industrial area and also of Bowenpally market getting flooded.

Meanwhile, special teams from GHMC, HMWSSB and HYDRAA were rushed to tackle flooding of roads.

Due to traffic disruptions, all the metro stations witnessed a heavy rush. Almost all metro stations were packed with people, and serpentine queues were seen in front of ticket counters and on the platforms.
