Hyderabad: With back-to-back spells of heavy rain battering Hyderabad and nearby districts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday forecast more downpours over the weekend, issuing a heavy rainfall warning for 10 districts including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Sangareddy, and Mahbubnagar.
The city has been placed under an orange alert, with citizens asked to remain prepared and take precautions, especially in flood-prone areas. Officials urged commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and opt for Metro Rail services in case of heavy downpour.
The sudden shift in the weather, officials said, was due to strong monsoon currents colliding with a cyclonic circulation over central Telangana, combined with abundant moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. These factors are causing widespread instability and intense cloud development over the region.
“Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and surface winds are very likely across the southern and eastern parts of the state. Central districts like Hyderabad may witness moderate to very intense spells during the next 48 hours,” said Dr K. Nagarathna, head of the Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad.
The city’s disaster management teams remained on standby throughout Friday evening as intense rain lashed parts of the city. Officials said surface winds, already active across GHMC limits, were likely to intensify over the weekend.
The Telangana Development Planning Society advised residents to check real-time rainfall updates and avoid waterlogged stretches and underpasses. A yellow alert remained in place for districts including Siddipet, Medak, Kamareddy, Nagarkurnool and Vikarabad.
