Hyderabas Weather: Rain forecast for Telangana, Hyderabad
Nagaratna, head of the IMD’s Hyderabad centre, told ANI, “In the coming two to three days, many places in the state are expected to receive light to moderate rains.” She added that yellow warnings have been issued for Telangana, with a possibility of heavy rainfall in several areas during this period. For Hyderabad, Nagaratna noted, “Hyderabad is likely to experience increased rainfall activity from today.”
According to an IMD release, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka between July 16 and 22. Rainfall is also expected in Lakshadweep between July 18 and 20, Rayalaseema on July 18 and 19, and Telangana on July 17 and 18.
The IMD said isolated to scattered rainfall is likely in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Telangana over the next seven days.
Traffic hit, power outages in multiple areas
Though Hyderabad remained sunny on Saturday, traffic continued to be slow in parts of the city due to waterlogging from Friday’s downpour. The Telangana Development Planning Society reported that the highest rainfall was 129.5 mm in Pulkal mandal of Sangareddy, followed by 123.5 mm in Dharmasagar of Chevella mandal in Rangareddy, and 115.3 mm in the Bowenpally Ward Office area of Medchal-Malkajgiri.
Rainfall above 100 mm was also recorded in Pikit Health Centre (115 mm) and Nacharam Ward Office (101.5 mm).According to the IMD’s forecast for Hyderabad and surrounding areas, “Light to moderate rain or thundershowers, at times intense spells, accompanied with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are very likely in the city towards evening/night.”
State government monitoring situation
Hyderabad in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who also holds the Municipal Administration and Urban Development portfolio, is regularly reviewing the situation. He added that officials have been working to ensure that there are no issues at the city’s 141 identified waterlogging points.
Commuters stuck, residents frustrated
Heavy rains disrupted life across key areas such as Begumpet (114.3 mm), Kukatpally (113.5 mm), Kapra (101 mm), and Malakpet (98.5 mm). Several other areas including Malkajgiri, Bandlaguda, Gachibowli, Madhapur, Patny, Musheerabad, Amberpet, Quthbullapur, and Himayatnagar received rainfall between 80 mm and 97 mm.
Commuters were stuck on waterlogged roads, with some stranded for hours. “I could see how the roads were jam-packed from my office. I waited in my office for one and a half hours, so I could leave once traffic gets moving,” said S Mallareddi, a finance professional commuting from Raidurg to Kondapur.
“We could not move for an hour. This is how Hyderabad crumbles when it rains. Nothing ever changes,” said Shubh Sathe, a techie who travels daily from the Financial District to Attapur.
Flooded culverts in Moosapet and Indiranagar also brought traffic to a halt. In Alugaddabavi and Tarnaka, residents faced long delays. “Everything’s clogged and not one traffic cop is here to help. Even ambulances were struggling to pass,” said Sree Sai Sindhu.
Excavators were deployed in Bandlaguda and Fatehnagar to clear clogged stormwater drains. Several areas including Bowenpally, Tarnaka, Musheerabad, Malkajgiri, Uppal, and Manikonda also reported power cuts.
