E-Rickshaws Prohibited From Carrying School Children In Bhopal

BHOPAL: Transportation of school children by E-rickshaws has been banned in Bhopal, officials said on Sunday.

The decision will come into force on Monday, according to Bhopal district collector Kausalendra Vikram Singh.

The Bhopal district education officer (DEO) has been asked to intimate the decision in this regard to all the school managements in Bhopal, officials said,

“The decision was taken in the interest of the safety of the school children”, officials said.

The move was taken following recommendations by the police and experts, sources said.

Mr. Singh also appealed to the parents of the school going children not to send their wards to the schools in the E-rickshaws.

The move comes a couple of days after the Bhopal Lok Sabha member and senior BJP leader Alok Sharma made a representation in this regard to the district administration, sources said.

According to the Bhopal additional commissioner of police (ACP) (traffic) Ashok Vajpayee, there are around 12,500 registered E-rickshaws plying in the city.

The decision to ban the E-rickshaws as the transportation mode for school children comes in the wake of apprehensions raised about the safety of school children by their parents and experts.

E-rickshaws are relatively small and light-weight and they sometimes overturn when the driver crosses the speed limit prescribed for the vehicle, leading to accidents, police said.
