Hello Folks!
Let me Introduce my little brother, Oreo aka Gundu. Yes! You read that right, it’s funny how you don’t want a pet and they become family over time but that’s something that I am sure every pet owner can not talk about enough.
My dog, a Dachshund, is going to be 5 this year. He’s an avid traveller like my family who loves travelling, now when I got him my parent’s were worried about how we were going to travel with a pet. Thankfully the little was born to travel and has fit into our plans perfectly and has no complaints however long the journey is!
So I think the most important part is your pet is comfortable travelling.
We had a Honda City the first time he travelled with us, I think he was a little over a year old and we were quite anxious as the journey was fairly long (Bangalore-Chikmagalur) but we ensured he was comfortable and gave him pit stops almost every hour to make sure he’s comfortable.
This is around the same time we were looking for an upgrade and he played a big role in us finalizing and buying the Carnival and I can attest to the fact that no one has enjoyed the Carnival more than him so much so that we added a small seat for himself in the car custom made for him, he likes looking at the road like the navigator and when he’s off duty he uses the VIP seat which only my mom and dad have access to other than him, anybody else take that seat get ready to be stared at like you stole something for the entire time you’re in the car.
When we travel we ensure he doesn’t get on the front seat, earlier we used to use a dog leash attachment which uses the seat belt buckle but over time he has learnt to balance himself and not jump out of the car even when the door is open and weve never used a collar on him only the harness.
When we travel long distances we make sure we carry all his emergency meds and bed for him just in case, pack food for him whenever possible (eats only curd rice, so very accessible and worry free) and make sure we give him a pit stop every 2 hrs or 200 kms travelled, ensure he’s hydrated and he’s smart enough to ask the person to stop the car in case of emergencies
Out of the 60k odd kilometers the Carnival has run it’s safe to say my dog’s been in the car for atleast 50k kilometers
and so far we haven’t had any problem and some major trips include
- Bangalore- rameshwaram
- Bangalore-kanniyakumari
- Bangalore- Shirdi (The longest so far)
We haven’t had any problems from the govt authorities while passing through any forest area so far. We make sure we book pet friendly stays anywhere we go. In essence he becomes a central figure in every decision we take!
Most important thing is make sure you drive at a steady speed, enjoy the drive which makes it stress free for you and the pet and if you’re a new pet owner ensure you are patient and give enough time for the pet to acclimatize.
Ending my post with a few pictures of Gundu
Happy Travelling!
