Telangana Health Department issues advisory about seasonal illnesses following rain forecast

Hyderabad: Telangana department of public health and family welfare has issued a general health advisory urging citizens to stay vigilant against seasonal illnesses. This follows the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad’s forecast of heavy rainfall across Telangana for the next five days.

According to the IMD, moderate to intense showers are expected across several districts, including Hyderabad, Medak, Warangal, Karimnagar, and Khammam, accompanied by drops in temperature and a spike in humidity, conditions ideal for the spread of vector, water, and air-borne diseases.

Mosquito-borne Illnesses: Dengue, Malaria, and Chikungunya

Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, emphasized the need for heightened precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses. “Residents must take steps to prevent mosquito breeding inside and around their homes. Mosquito screens, repellents, and weekly cleaning of stagnant water are critical preventive measures,” he stated in the advisory.

The Health Department has also reinforced the weekly observance of ‘Dry Day’ every Friday, during which residents are encouraged to empty, clean, and dry water containers in and around their homes to prevent mosquito breeding.

Key Measures for Mosquito Control:

• Install nets or screens on windows and doors.

• Use mosquito repellents regularly.

• Cover beds and baby cribs with nets.

• Clean and cover septic tanks and water storage containers.

• Prevent water stagnation in and around homes.

Waterborne Diseases: Typhoid, Jaundice, and Gastroenteritis

With flood-like conditions in some areas and rising water contamination risks, health officials have warned of increased chances of waterborne diseases. “Boiled or filtered drinking water is non-negotiable during this time,” said Dr. L. Sreevalli, a Hyderabad-based internal medicine specialist. “Hand hygiene and food safety are crucial. Avoid eating roadside food and ensure vegetables and fruits are properly washed.”

Key Preventive Measures:

• Drink only filtered or boiled water.

• Wash hands before meals and after using the restroom.

• Avoid consumption of stale or street food.

Airborne Illnesses: Influenza and Viral Fevers

The advisory also highlights an uptick in seasonal flu, cough, sore throat, and fever cases. Citizens are advised to minimize close physical contact and practice respiratory hygiene.

Dr. Pranita Vemuri, a pulmonologist, said, “People must wear masks if they are sick and maintain hand hygiene. Using a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing reduces the risk of community spread.”

Symptoms to Watch For:

• Cough, fever, headache, sore throat, and body aches.

• Seek medical help at government health centres if symptoms persist.

Precautions for Flu Prevention:

• Avoid handshakes, especially if sick.

• Use hand sanitizers regularly.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief while sneezing.

Public Health Measures and Emergency Services

The Telangana government has activated a monsoon health response plan. Special beds, IV fluids, and emergency medicines have been stocked at public hospitals across the state. In addition, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and Anganwadi workers have been issued ORS sachets and basic medicines to distribute in their localities if needed.

In case of emergencies, citizens are encouraged to call the 108 Ambulance Services.

“We are monitoring the situation closely. Our health infrastructure is alert and ready to handle any outbreak,” Dr. Nayak assured.

Weather Forecast: More Rain Ahead

According to the latest IMD bulletin, Hyderabad and its surrounding districts are likely to experience heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and lightning over the coming days. Maximum temperatures are expected to drop by 2–4°C, while relative humidity may reach up to 90% during peak rainfall hours.
