  • Detroit Lions backups Roy Lopez (foot) and Sione Vaki (hamstring) are expected to miss a few days of practice.
  • Khalil Dorsey (leg) is progressing and may return by the end of training camp.
  • Malcolm Rodriguez (knee) is recovering well but isn’t expected back until October.

Two Detroit Lions backups won’t practice Tuesday, July 22, and are expected to be sidelined for the next few days, head coach Dan Campbell said.

Campbell delivered that update less than 24 hours after defensive tackle Roy Lopez and running back Sione Vaki were injured Monday during drills.

“Don’t think they’re major, but we’ll see where they shake out,” Campbell added.

Campbell noted that Lopez was “stepped on” by a teammate, whose cleat “twisted” on top of Lopez’s foot. Vaki, meanwhile, hurt his hamstring.

“That was unfortunate,” Campbell said about Vaki. “We’re really high on him from an offensive standpoint, certainly special teams. … We feel like just athletically, size-wise, explosiveness, power, there’s versatility in what he can do. … He might be able to play multiple roles, multiple positions.”

Other injury updates:

  • Campbell said cornerback Khalil Dorsey, who broke his tibula and fibula last December, is “progressing” in his rehabilitation and the team is hopeful that he could be back by the end of training camp in late August.
  • Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last November, is “doing really good.” But Campbell doesn’t anticipate the fourth-year veteran returning until October.
  • Defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, who is currently on the active/PUP list as he recovers from a season-ending injury, isn’t expected to return until September, Campbell said.
  • Rookie offensive guard Miles Frazier, who was taken in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft, is dealing with a knee injury and began camp on the active/PUP list. Campbell estimates that he won’t be available to practice and play until September or October.
