
Guntur West MLA Galla Madhavi, GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu and Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra hand over ₹5 lakh cheque to family members of a deceased workerin Guntur on Wednesday
In the wake of a fatal accident that claimed the life of a daily wage worker on Tuesday, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) is taking firm steps to reinforce worker safety measures. GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu announced that he will convene a meeting with all civil work contractors associated with the civic body to reiterate the mandatory safety protocols for ongoing and upcoming development projects.

Speaking to The Hindu on Wednesday, Mr. Srinivasulu highlighted that strict safety measures have already been prescribed to all contractors during the awarding of tenders. “We have clearly outlined safety protocols that contractors are required to follow, and we will once again emphasise their importance at the upcoming meeting, which is likely to be held on Thursday,” he said. The Commissioner also revealed an additional measure: “Apart from enforcing safety precautions, GMC will require contractors to provide life insurance for every worker before they are engaged in any project-related activities.”
Meanwhile, a condolence meeting was held at the GMC office on Wednesday to honour Thota Apparao, the daily wage worker who lost his life when an under-construction culvert collapsed in the city. During the gathering, Guntur Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra, Commissioner Srinivasulu, and Guntur West MLA Galla Madhavi handed over a cheque of ₹5 lakh to the bereaved family through the project’s contractor. Mr. Ravindra extended his heartfelt condolences and assured the family of comprehensive support from the civic body. “We stand by the family of Mr. Apparao in this difficult time, and all necessary assistance will be provided,” he stated.
