Heavy Rainfall Lashes Parts of Mumbai

Mumbai: Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Mumbai on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘yellow alert’ for the city. The forecast predicts a generally cloudy sky with heavy rain throughout the day.

In addition to Mumbai, the IMD also issued yellow alerts for Palghar and Thane districts. An ‘orange alert’ was declared for Raigad, indicating a higher probability of intense rainfall. On Saturday, Mumbai witnessed significant showers, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recording 6.80 mm of rainfall in Mumbai City, 11.53 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 7.42 mm in the western suburbs between 8 am and 10 pm.

Saturday also saw a red alert issued for Palghar, and orange alerts for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad.

Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh, heavy rainfall on Saturday night led to the submergence of the Jogitikariya bridge on the Dindori-Jabalpur route, causing the Narmada River to overflow. As a result, traffic was halted and diverted from both directions.

Sub-divisional Police Officer Satish Dwivedi confirmed that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with police and Home Guard personnel, were deployed at the site to manage the situation. “The Narmada River is in spate. The river is flowing over the Jogitikariya bridge. Traffic from both sides has been diverted… Adequate security arrangements have been made here,” he told ANI.

On Saturday, the IMD also issued a red alert for Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming hours.

The weather system, classified as a depression over east Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh, moved westward at a speed of 12 kmph over the past six hours. As of 11:30 pm IST on July 26, it was centered near Lat. 23.3°N and Long. 81.0°E, approximately 30 km south-southeast of Umaria, 110 km east of Jabalpur, and 170 km east-southeast of Damoh. The system is expected to continue its westward movement across Madhya Pradesh and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by July 27.

A red alert has been issued for several districts including North Seoni, Mandla/Kanha, South Khandwa, and South Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, as well as Nanded, Parbhani, and Hingoli in interior Maharashtra. These areas are expected to receive heavy rainfall, accompanied by a high probability of cloud-to-ground lightning.

Parts of east Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, south Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, south Kerala, south Chhattisgarh, southeast Uttar Pradesh (Kanpur), south Punjab, south Haryana, and Gangetic West Bengal remain under an orange alert for moderate rainfall and potential lightning activity
