The AWD (all-wheel drive) system isn’t as popular in India as its in Europe and North America. However, this niche feature is gradually gaining traction in the country. Considering the growing market demand, carmakers are introducing some of their popular premium offerings with AWD configuration. Tata Motors recently launched the Harrier EV with a QWD (Quad Wheel Drive) system, which is essentially the AWD setup using dual electric motors to deliver power to all four wheels.
New-Gen Tata Harrier & Safari:

Tata has also planned to introduce the new-generation Harrier (codenamed Taurus) and Safari (codenamed Leo) SUVs with an AWD drivetrain system in 2027. Both SUVs will switch to a new platform and will be offered with multiple powertrain options including diesel, petrol and electric.
If reports are to be believed, the all-new Tata Harrier and Safari SUVs will underpin a new flexible platform, which will be similar to Mahindra Freedom NU architecture. Tata’s new platform will be compatible with AWD tech and will increase the overall length of the SUVs by 100mm – 200mm. The current-gen Harrier and Safari measure 4,605mm and 4,668mm in length, respectively. The increased length might also result in a slightly more spacious interior.
For those unaware, Tata Motors has joined hands with China-based Desay automotive electronics manufacturing firm to co-develop this new-gen architecture. This new flexible platform, set to debut on the Harrier and Safari, will enable the integrated next-gen infotainment systems and autonomous driving technologies.
Tata Harrier & Safari Petrol Launching Soon
Tata Motors plans to launch the petrol-powered Harrier and Safari by the end of this financial year. Both SUVs will be offered with the brand’s all-new 1.5L, 4-cylinder TGDi direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, pushing out a maximum power of 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm and 3,500rpm.
The new petrol engine will be available with manual and automatic gearbox options. The same engine will also power the Tata Sierra, which will initially be introduced with a naturally aspirated petrol engine.
