Vijayawada: The speed bumps installed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on the NH-16 near Netaji Flyover — — meant to improve pedestrian safety — have added to the misery of commuters. Vehicles in large numbers are getting stuck for long durations, resulting in significant traffic jams on the Kanka Durga Varadhi flyover.The NHAI installed the speed bumps on the Chennai-Kolkata NH-16 stretch to facilitate safe crossing for pedestrians, particularly for residents of Balaji Nagar and Ranigarithota areas. “The speed bumps were installed as a remedial measure to prevent pedestrian deaths, as people living near the national highway and residing in the Ranigarithota and Balaji Nagar areas are endangering their lives to cross the highway to reach MG Road and other parts of the city,” a city traffic police official said.Originally, the residents demanded the construction of an underpass at the Netaji Flyover area to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and vehicles from Ranigarithota and Balaji Nagar to access MG Road and other areas.
