All 70 gates of Prakasam Barrage lifted, over 60,000 cusecs of floodwater discharged | Vijayawada News


Vijayawada: All 70 gates of the Prakasam Barrage were opened to discharge 60,875 cusecs of excess floodwaters downstream into the sea on Wednesday. Irrigation authorities lifted 55 gates by one foot and 15 gates by two feet to release the water.According to Krishna Central Division executive engineer and Krishna River conservator Ravi, the inflows at Prakasam Barrage were expected to reach two lakh cusecs by Wednesday night and 2.5 lakh cusecs by Thursday morning. Nearly three lakh cusecs of floodwaters were released from Pulichintala at 4:30 pm on Wednesday and were expected to reach Prakasam Barrage by Thursday evening.Meanwhile, NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha, along with officials, visited the Prakasam Barrage to assess the flood situation. He said floodwater discharge was expected to rise to three lakh cusecs in the next 48 hours and directed irrigation, revenue, police, panchayati raj, municipal, and other field-level departments to remain on high alert. He also advised residents in low-lying areas, both upstream and downstream, to stay vigilant. Fishermen were urged not to venture into the river.The district collector further stated that the administration had identified around 43 low-lying areas in Vijayawada city and mapped them to nearby relief centres. If necessary, residents in these areas would be relocated to relief camps.In view of the rising Krishna River levels, the district administration has set up a 24×7 control room and urged the public to report any flood-related emergencies by calling 91549 70454.
