Buying an 11-year old BMW 3GT: What to look out for?

Buying an 11-year old BMW 3GT: What to look out for? BHPian Illuminati recently shared this with other enthusiasts: Hi all, Looking for some guidance from the experts here. I’ve come across a used BMW Gran Turismo and need to take a call soon. This will be the first luxury vehicle in the family, so naturally, I’m feeling excited but want to take a cautious call – especially around maintenance costs and long-term reliability. Here are the key details:Model Year: 01/2014 (Registered in 01/2015)Engine: 3.0L Inline-6 Diesel (2993cc) | Euro IVOdometer: ~30,000 kmOwnership: 3rd owner1st: Company2nd: Individual3rd: Transferred within the family in Oct 2024Asking Price: 14 LakhsWhat’s bothering me: Low running for an 11-year-old car. Seller says it was sparingly used – I can verify it via service records, but I’m still on the fence. Secondly, the upkeep – especially without BMW warranty/support. This car I’m helping my brother purchase from his senior. So while there’s a relationship angle, I still want to make a sound, practical decision. Next step: We are planning a test drive soon. Would be great if the forum can help me with: 1. What all to check during the test drive? 2. Known issues or quirks of this model/year? 3. Any reliable FNGs in NCR who can accompany me for inspection or take a look later or details about BWM service center which can run a full diagnostic. Photos attached for reference. Appreciate all help. I don’t want to let emotions get the better of judgment here. Thanks in advance. Here’s whatBHPian Turbanatorhad to say on the matter:From the pictures, the car looks neat. Lower mileage is very much possible if one has multiple cars. Best to take it to the BMW dealership, maybe Deutche in Faridabad ( they have a very large workshop & knowledgable persons in service) and pay for a 360 Degree checkup and find out all the service/ warranty/ repair history. Here’s whatBHPian sandeepmohanhad to say on the matter:Two points:Don’t rush in on a purchase for a used car. Not the end of the world if it sells to someone else.Take out the whole relationship angle. This is now a very old German car thats been through the hustle and bustle of our driving and weather conditions. If your brother is prepared to cough up a lac each year (minimum) for the next 5 years, then all good.Is a relatively smooth and reliable engine. Not the most quiet. The Tech is out of date. The Kia next to you will be far more advanced. Can be sorted with some upgrades but that all adds up towards upkeep costs. The plastics are known to age on this car rather early so observe melted door grab handles and listen for rattles. The diesel engine may drown out the presence of rattles.Pay attention to all the rubber gaskets that seal the car. They are known to crack, fail.Tires are expensive.Read BHPian comments for more insights and information.
