Hyderabad: The city’s first multilevel car parking facility, located near KBR Park Entry Gate 1, between the LV Prasad Eye Institute junction and the Jubilee Hills Check Post Junction, is set to become operational by mid-August.
The initiative aims to address the growing demand for parking spaces in the city. Anurag Jayanti, Zonal Commissioner, Khairatabad, said, “The trial run is complete, and there are plans to inaugurate the multilevel car parking by the mid-week of August.”
Built on 405 square metres, the facility has a capacity of 72 cars that can be parked in six rotary stacks. Each rotary stack accommodates 12 cars. The GHMC has fixed user charges at Rs. 30 per car and Rs. 10 for two-wheelers for three hours. The facility can be used with a smart card that works with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). A proposal to allow booking of slots through a mobile app is under active consideration.
Parking will be available between 5 am and 10 pm. Users can park their cars in three simple steps: drive the vehicle, apply the handbrake, and exit. The safety system then takes over the automated stacking process.
According to GHMC officials, users can retrieve their cars automatically from the stack by swiping the smart card. The process takes only a few seconds. “The facility is not only for visitors coming to KBR Park but also for those who have work or business nearby. Apart from cars, 20 per cent of the available space has been earmarked for two-wheelers,” said Assistant Engineer (ADVT), GHMC, Naveen Kumar.
The multilevel smart parking has been developed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode by engaging a Hyderabad-based private firm, on a Design, Build, Finance, Operation and Transfer (DBFOT) basis.
A multilevel car and two-wheeler parking facility built with RCC is available in a multi-floor building at the Abids GHMC office. Available for the past two decades, that facility works manually, whereas the new one near KBR Park is mechanical with no manual intervention.
The multilevel parking near KBR Park is a pilot project with Korean technology. Similar smart parking facilities are planned for other areas of the city such as Abids, Secunderabad and Charminar.
