Hyderabad: After days of dry, hot weather, parts of Hyderabad were caught off guard by a brief but disruptive spell of rain on Wednesday evening. The rain, which began around 5.20 pm, took many commuters and residents by surprise, especially in areas that had seen no rainfall since the beginning of the week.
The showers were first triggered by a fast-moving cloud system entering the city from the west, with weather activity building up around the Sangareddy belt before spreading quickly towards western and central Hyderabad. Despite clear skies throughout most of the day, the rain moved in swiftly, leaving little time for residents to prepare. Those on the roads were seen scrambling for shelter under Metro pillars, flyovers and shop fronts, as umbrellas and raincoats were mostly absent during evening commutes.
Major localities, including Parade Ground, Paradise, Marredpally, Kukatpally and KPHB, witnessed sudden showers, with visibility dipping and road surfaces turning slick during peak travel hours. While the spell brought some welcome relief from the week’s dry spell, it also caused brief traffic slowdowns and minor chaos, particularly in stretches with poor drainage.
The India Meteorological Department issued an alert only at 5.30 pm, stating that a cloud formation from the western corridor would bring light to moderate rain across parts of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The advisory came just as the rainfall had already started in several areas, raising concerns about the timeliness of such warnings.
Rainfall figures updated by the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) show that most of the precipitation occurred in a narrow window between 5 and 6 pm. Hydernagar recorded the highest with 12.3 mm, followed by Bowenpally with 10.3 mm, Kukatpally and Chanda Nagar with 9.8 mm each, Moosapet at 9.5 mm and Safilguda at 9.3 mm. Other areas, including Quthbullapur, Serilingampally, Kapra and Anandbagh also registered light showers, ranging from 6.3 to 7.5 mm. Medchal district, adjoining Hyderabad, experienced light showers from the same cloud system.
As cloud movement patterns remain active over Telangana, scientists at IMD have indicated that similar isolated showers could continue in the west, central, and northern parts of the city in the evenings over the coming days.
