Hyderabad: After nearly four years of neglect, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated steps to replace 525 dysfunctional public toilets across the city with functional ones. The GHMC has begun calling for expressions of interest (EOI) at the zonal level to replace the existing units while ensuring that operational toilets come up at the same locations.
Agencies are required to re-use, re-design, refurbish and utilise components from the existing structures based on their condition and add new elements wherever necessary to make them functional.
“The 525 toilets will be developed under the Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) model using the pay-and-use method. The GHMC will not bear any expenditure and the model will allow for hassle-free operation and maintenance,” a GHMC official said.
As per the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs, one toilet seat is required for every 1,000 people. Hyderabad, with a population of over one crore, has only around 1,000 functional public toilets. “There are around 2,200 public toilets within GHMC limits, and more than half are either defunct or in poor condition,” admitted an official from the sanitation wing.
