India exports around 2.5 lakh tonnes of rice to the US annually, with sona masuri making up 40% of the shipments and basmati accounting for the remaining 60%. Current prices range between $900 and $1000 per tonne for sona masuri, while basmati costs between $1200 and $1300 per tonne. With the tariff, prices are set to rise sharply, affecting both everyday meals and special occasions.

Cultural Traditions at Stake

Some may suggest switching to other grains, but food traditions cannot be replaced so easily. As the Rice Exporters Association has warned, the community will “be badly affected” by this policy. For many, the issue is not only about cost but about preserving a cultural connection that has been maintained for generations.
