Hyderabad IVF scam: Dr Namrata claimed baby mix-up, tried to throw couple off trail; offered adoption, fresh procedure
A couple who sought fertility treatment at Universal Srushti Fertility Centre discovered they were given the wrong baby after noticing the child’s features didn’t match theirs. Dr. P Namratha allegedly admitted the mix-up and offered adoption, which the couple refused due to lost trust.

HYDERABAD: In the Universal Srushti Fertility Centre case, one of the complainants told Gopalpuram police that after they confronted Dr P Namratha about being given the wrong baby, she admitted the mix-up and said she would “take back the child and begin the adoption process”.According to the complaint, the couple had turned to the clinic after previous failed attempts at conceiving. Their baby, born via a surrogate mother in June, spent 11 days in the ICU of a private hospital before being handed over in July with a birth certificate. The couple grew suspicious when the infant’s features didn’t resemble theirs, prompting a DNA test that confirmed the child was not biologically related to them.“When confronted, Dr Namratha initially sought time and later claimed donor samples were used, making it impossible to trace the biological parents. She told us to return the infant so she could start adoption paperwork and offered to redo the procedure for a biological child,” the complainant told police. The couple, having lost trust, refused further contact, focusing on the infant’s safety. This incident reportedly occurred just days before Dr Namratha’s arrest in a child trafficking racket, triggered by a similar complaint from another couple.Police sources said most of the eight complaints surfaced after news of the arrest. Many victims, some paying up to 20 lakh, alleged they were promised specific procedures but received no results. Several had approached the centre after failed IVF attempts elsewhere, including abroad. So far, 25 people, including doctors and agents, have been arrested.
