While that might seem acceptable, visa officers often treat the I-20 as the final authority, so an expired date could put the application in jeopardy.

The student’s anxiety grew worse after hearing another applicant’s story of having their visa refused 32 days after the interview. The rejection was allegedly because they emailed the embassy twice to check the status. With limited appointment slots in India and officers under pressure to thoroughly review each case, even small mismatches between the I-20 and planned arrival dates can cause problems. Officers are unlikely to consider that delayed or unavailable visa slots caused the program date to pass.
