My Volkswagen Taigun 1.0 GT Line: Ownership experience

Overall, I would say it’s a great car to own. It has all the relevant features one would need for a comfortable driving experience

Purchase Decision

I had been thinking about purchasing a car for the last 3 years, but could never convince myself that I actually needed it just yet. I have been driving since I was in the 8th standard (not something I would encourage). My earliest memory of cars is the Jeep my grandfather received from the government, and I guess that’s where my love for cars began.

Coming back to the actual story — in 2024, my wife finally pushed me, saying we should really purchase one.

The first step was to fix the budget. Initially, I was targeting somewhere between 10–12 lakhs. I also really wanted a sedan, so the first car I test-drove was the Honda Amaze. To be honest, except for the A/C cooling, I didn’t really like the feel of the car and felt a little under-powered. I checked out a few other cars as well, such as the i20 and Altroz (due to the lack of sedan options in this segment). That’s when my brother pointed out that since we had been driving my father’s Creta for the last 3–4 years, I wasn’t enjoying cars in this segment.

While we were having these discussions, my wife spotted the Taigun and really liked it’ss look. For me, it was all about the driving experience. I had driven a Virtus from Delhi to Jaipur and back — it was a 1.0L engine, and I really loved the way it felt both in the city and on the highway.

When we went to the showroom, I also asked my wife to check out the Virtus. To be honest, I wanted to convince her about the Virtus, but she was sure about the Taigun. Later, I thought that at least the engine was the same, and when I took the test drive, the overall performance felt good.

I was very clear about the features I wanted in the car. Sunroof and digital clusters were not on my list. Based on my requirements, the sales executive suggested the perfect model — the Taigun 1.0L TSI GT Line (this was the earlier version which had already been discontinued, so I got a very good deal).

Since I bought the car, I’ve travelled a lot. Twice, we have gone from Delhi to Patna. We also frequently travel from Delhi to Churu district (my in-laws live there). I used to travel daily from Delhi to Gurgaon for office during peak hours.

During winters it used to give great mileage since AC used to be off. However, it really depends upon how you drive. It will give you a really punchy feel when turbo kicks in but it will result in really low mileage. But if you increase speed in a steady manner it will really give good mileage. In fact, while travelling to my village in Bihar my brother was driving Creta and I was in Taigun and when we compared the mileage Taigun actually gave 2.5 kmpl more than Creata that too when my brother drives more sedately than me.

I also took extended warranty and service value pack. It costed me almost 45k extra. But I think it is worth to have it. Insurance costed me around 43k. Paid extra 10k for accessories which I feel is not worth it but took it since I already bargained a lot for other discounts.

Ownership Experience so far:

Pros

Overall drive quality has been excellent.

Mileage is around 18–19 km/l without A/C, and with A/C it drops to 15–16 km/l. It can even give 20+ km/l without A/C if you maintain a speed of 80–90 km/h.

Front seats are extremely comfortable with proper arm support.

The speakers are some local German make, but their performance is extremely good. Volkswagen has done a great job with the design — the car hasn’t scraped the bottom on any bumps so far.

Heavy doors — we really had to get used to closing them in one go.

Night drives have been smooth as the headlight throw and focus are great.

Compared to Creta 1.5 NA engine I felt Taagun 1.0L TSI is quicker through the blocks when you don’t punch the accelerator.

Though it is smaller in size compared to other SUVs in this segment but from inside it feels roomy.

Instrument cluster touch quality is great.

Even though the boot space is less then CRETA but I have observed that it accommodates same amount of luggage.

Cons

The power window works oddly — in fact, it stopped working from the passenger side due to an issue with the clicker. Sometime one touch up does not work.

The instrument cluster resets sometimes.

Auto ignition on-off didn’t work properly initially; however, after servicing, it has been fine.

Rides can feel a bit bumpy on bad roads since the shock absorbers are a bit stiff — but this ensures great stability on highways.

My wife pointed out when 3 people are sitting behind, it feels a bit congested.

Since, AC has touch system. You need to be a bit careful with using it.

Overall, I would say it’s a great car to own. It has all the relevant features one would need for a comfortable driving experience.

Do check out the Car’s pic and the mileage screenshots it gave while I was travelling from Delhi to Gurgaon during my office travel at morning time.
