Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Governor and Indian Red Cross Society AP state branch president S. Abdul Nazeer has launched the AP Climate Action Plan and Amaravati Plastic-Free City Campaign at a programme held under the aegis of the AP Red Cross in Guntur on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said it was a unique initiative taken up by the AP Red Cross. He appreciated the participation of students, youngsters and volunteers in the campaign, and called for raising awareness among the people about the ill-effects of excessive use of plastic in daily life. He stressed the need to eliminate single-use plastics by promoting sustainable habits and protecting the environment for future generations.
The Governor noted that India had a per capita plastic consumption of 11 kg and generated about 3.5 million metric tonnes of plastic waste annually. He cautioned that dumping plastic waste could deteriorate soil quality and contaminate underground water.
