Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed is battling a foot injury
Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he is hopeful Jayden Reed will be ready for Week 1. He missed the preseason opener and had on a walking boot.
Jordan Love’s injury is the headliner. But elsewhere on the offense, the Green Bay Packers’ wide receivers have caught the injury bug as well.
The Packers entered training camp with a wide receiver room that was deep but with players who had something to prove.
They have a mix of veterans, newcomers and holdovers all looking to make their mark in what can be a make or break year for many of them on this roster.
Even without Christian Watson, who the Packers knew would miss time after his devastating injury in the 2024 regular-season finale, this group had so many guys that head coach Matt LaFleur moved one of his receivers (Bo Melton) to defense.
Well, that depth, much like the running backs earlier during training camp, is being put to the test after several injuries.
Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks have joined Watson on the sideline in recent days and now Romeo Doubs will likely be added to the injury report after leaving practice on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Here’s the status of each wide receiver an d what the current depth chart looks like as the Packers head to Indianapolis to play the Colts in their second preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Packers injuries
Love’s injury to his thumb was the biggest news to come before practice on Aug. 12. But the injuries kept coming when the team hit the field.
And the pass catchers, who are already down some of their top players, were the latest to be sidelined. First came Doubs, who left practice after a collision. It wasn’t immediately clear what Doubs hurt, according to reports, but he was slow to get up before walking with a trainer into the Don Hutson Center. Doubs suffered two concussions last season, including one in the team’s playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He has been wearing a Guardian Cap throughout training camp and the preseason.
Tight end Luke Musgrave also bowed out early with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
Third-year pro Jayden Reed has been out since Aug. 6 with a sprained left foot and was in a walking boot in the locker room after the preseason game. Meanwhile, Dontayvion Wicks, who was also held out of the preseason opener, is battling a calf injury. And then there is Watson, who is on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from his torn ACL suffered in Week 18 of last season on Jan. 5, 2025.
It’s unlikely that any of these players will suit up during the rest of the Packers’ preseason schedule. That will open the door for others further down the depth chart.
Packers wide receiver depth chart
- Jayden Reed – He has led the Packers in receiving yards in each of his first two seasons. Had 55 catches for 857 yards with six touchdowns in 2024 after 64 receptions and 793 yards with eight touchdowns as a rookie. Selected by the Packers in the second round of the 2023 draft. In addition to his use in the passing game, also frequently used as a weapon in run and sweep formations.
- Romeo Doubs – Played in 13 games last season and caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns. Former fourth-round draft pick missed two games with a concussion during the regular season and was also suspended for one for missing practice. Left the team’s divisional playoff game with another concussion.
- Matthew Golden – Big things expected for the 23rd overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Texas rookie is getting rave reviews during training camp for his speed and strong hands. Golden was the Packers’ first wide receiver taken in the first round in 23 years.
- Dontayvion Wicks – Wicks is looking for a bounce-back season after his production dropped in his second season. Selected in the fifth round out of Virginia in 2023. Had 39 receptions for 415 yards last season, down from 581 with the same number of catches during his rookie season. Has nine touchdowns in his first two seasons.
- Malik Heath – In his third season with the Packers after going undrafted in 2023. Has played in 13 games in each season and added depth at the back-end of the roster. Caught 10 balls on just 13 targets for 97 yards and two touchdowns last season after 15 receptions for 125 yards and one TD in 2023.
- Savion Williams – He was the 87th overall pick in the third round by the Packers in the 2025 NFL Draft. Named honorable-mention All-Big 12 in 2024 at TCU. Ran a 4.48-second, 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.
- Mecole Hardman Jr. – Signed in the offseason as a free agent. Spent the majority of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs where he has won three Super Bowls. Has 178 receptions, 2,302 yards and 16 touchdowns in his six-year career. Caught the game-winning touchdown in overtime of Super Bowl LVIII two years ago. Hardman is a former All-Pro returner and that’s his ticket to making the roster.
- Julian Hicks – Second-year player spent last season on the Packers practice squad after going undrafted in 2024. Signed a reserve/future contract after last season ended.
- Isaiah Neyor – Recent signee after the rookie was cut by the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 4. Went undrafted this spring. Played at Wyoming, Texas and Nebraska during his college career.
- Cornelius Johnson – Second-year player spent last season on the Packers practice squad. Signed a reserve/future contract after last season ended. Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round of the 2024 draft.
- Will Sheppard – Rookie undrafted free agent signed with the Packers before the start of training camp. Played at Vanderbilt and Colorado in college.
- Christian Watson – Fourth-year player and former second-round draft pick is on the physically unable to perform list. He has battled soft tissue injuries to his hamstrings throughout his career but when healthy he gives the Packers their best deep threat. In 38 games across three seasons, he has 1,653 yards and 14 touchdowns with a career-high of seven during his rookie year in 2022.
