Hyderabad: Despite the controversy around the existence of pigeons among humans, people in the city continue to keep pigeons as a hobby or for commercial purposes.
“In fact, it has only increased in the last few years. Youngsters are looking towards it to make quick money, rather than indulging in it as a hobby by rearing fancy breeds,” said Mohd Ansar, a pigeon breeder from Fateh Darwaza.
Social media platforms have opened a big market to sell or purchase the pigeons, online advertisement portals, Facebook and WhatsApp only expand the business scope.
The pigeon breeders have formed WhatsApp groups to facilitate the trade. A few species of pigeons, such as Fantail, Jacobin, Frill Back Pigeon, and Indian Gola, are preferred for both hobby and commercial trade.
“Fancy breeds fetch a handsome price, and the focus on breeding and rearing the fantail species is more in the city,” said Mohd Ghalib, a pigeon rearer.
A pair of pigeons costs between Rs 600 and Rs 10,000, depending on the demand and breed. The fancier the bird and the species, the higher their price.
