270 buses allocated for free bus ride for women scheme in Kurnool district

All arrangements are in place for the launch of ‘Stree Shakti’ scheme in Kurnool district from August 15 (Friday).

A total of 270 Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses of the total 390 buses in the district have been allocated for the free ride scheme for women and transgenders. Women and transgenders can travel free in the entire State by producing their proof of identity in Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary and Express buses, a release by the district transport department said.

According to officials, 186 Palle Velugu buses, two Ultra Palle Velugu and 82 Express buses have been allocated for the scheme. Officials added that the free ride will not be applicable to the buses operating to Srisailam. This accounts to 70 per cent of the fleet of the buses in the district earmarked for the scheme, the officials said. The scheme will be launched by Industries and Commerce Minister T.G. Bharath in the district.

It is estimated that nearly 2 lakh women will benefit from the scheme daily and the corporation had readied spare buses to meet the demand. These spare or unused buses have been overhauled for usage, officials said.
