Hyderabad:Several lakes in Hyderabad are grappling with blocked outlet gates as trash and water hyacinth accumulate and slowing down the water flow. With heavier rains expected soon, officials fear the blockages could cause flooding in nearby colonies.
Saroornagar Lake, Nagole Cheruvu, Ameenpur Lake and other water bodies have clogged outlet gates and channels. Locals told Deccan Chronicle the problem has been worsening for weeks. “The hyacinth drifts and collects around the outlet filter, choking the gate. If this is not cleared soon, the water level will rise and colonies like Trimurthy Colony on the other side will be flooded,” said Mahesh Reddy, a resident of Saroornagar’s Bapunagar.
At Nagole Cheruvu, residents complained that rotting trash stuck at the gate is causing foul odour and mosquito infestation. “We are unable to even walk because of the reeking smell. In the evenings, the mosquito problem is terrible,” said Naga Lakshmi, a resident.
The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) said teams have been deployed to clear the blockages. “We are removing trash and water hyacinth from the outlet gates to ensure water flows freely and upstream colonies are not affected,” a HYDRAA official said.
