Irfan Pathan has finally broken his silence on why he was removed from the IPL 2025 commentary panel. The former India all-rounder hinted that the decision was linked to his candid criticism of Rohit Sharma’s poor Test form. He said a commentator’s job is to share what is really happening on the field rather than shielding players.
Rohit Sharma’s poor Test run
In the 2024/25 Test season, Rohit managed only 164 runs in eight matches, with just one half-century. Pathan remarked that if Rohit had not been the captain, he would not have earned a spot in the playing eleven. While some reports claimed his removal was due to personal grudges, Pathan clarified that it was purely because of his honest commentary.
Speaking openly about pressure on commentators
On Lallantop’s show Guest in the Newsroom, Pathan explained how commentators are often pushed to support players despite poor performances. He said they were even accused of supporting Rohit too much, but in truth, they had openly stated he did not merit a place in the side if not for his captaincy. According to Pathan, commentary should focus on explaining the game to fans, not simply pleasing players.
Strong support from fans
Social media users have come out strongly in support of Pathan. Many wrote that no player is bigger than the sport, mentioning legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in the same breath. Fans stressed that Team India’s performance should take priority over individual favoritism.
Honesty in cricket
Pathan’s remarks serve as a reminder that honesty holds value in cricket. Even when it leads to consequences, fans appreciate commentators who speak the truth. For him, no player should ever be placed above the game itself.
