Flood-Hit Families Return, Still in Fear

Hyderabad: Residents of low-lying areas along the Musi river, who fled their homes after sudden flooding days ago, have returned but remain in fear that the waters may rise again. Families in Chaderghat’s Moosa Bowli, Moosarambagh’s Prakash Nagar and nearby colonies said they were unable to sleep peacefully as rains continued and excess water was released from Himayatsagar.

With the reservoir receiving heavy inflows, authorities opened its gates, flooding low-lying neighbourhoods. Streets and houses were inundated, forcing GHMC and HYDRAA officials to evacuate residents to safer locations. “We are back in our house, but every time it rains, we worry if we might have to leave again. We are all living in fear right now,” said Mohd Farooq, a resident of Moosa Nagar, Chaderghat.

At Prakashnagar and Teegalaguda, residents said the sight of the Musi river in full flow was alarming. Anil, a mechanic shed owner in Prakash Nagar, said, “The water is flowing at a dangerous rate. On Wednesday, it crossed the bridge and began creeping towards the roads. Just to be safe, I shifted my equipment elsewhere.”

Although water levels have receded after some gates of Himayatsagar were closed, locals fear further rainfall could lead to fresh inflows and another round of flooding. GHMC and HYDRAA officials said water levels were being closely monitored and urged residents to remain alert.
