Tirupati: Nellore police opened two rounds of fire in self defence after a notorious ganja smuggler tried to mow them down in a bid to evade being arrested. While one police constable sustained injuries in the incident, police eventually arrested the smuggler and seized 22 kg of ganja from the possession of the accused on Sunday. According to IG Ake Ravi Krishna, heading the Elite Anti Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (Eagle), the Balaji nagar police in Nellore along with the Eagle teams, acted on specific information about ganja smuggling and intensified vehicular checks near the national highway-16 in the outskirts of Nellore city on Sunday.A notorious smuggler from Rajahmundry identified as Biraka Prakash, who was enroute Nellore, to sell a large consignment of ganja, spotted the police from a distance and them tried to mow them down in a bid to evade police arrest. After a police constable Feroz was injured in the incident, Balaji Nagar circle inspector K Sambasiva Rao opened two rounds of fire in self defence and brought the smuggler’s vehicle to a grinding halt. The Eagle team and the Balaji Nagar police took Biraka Prakash into their custody and seized 22 kg of ganja from the vehicle. IG Ake Ravi Krishna stated that Prakash was involved in multiple ganja smuggling cases in East Godavari, Eluru and Nellore in the past. The Jeelugumilli police had also opened a suspect sheet against him.
