Vijayawada: A three-month-old baby girl was rescued from the Budameru rivulet after her father allegedly threw her off a bridge following a domestic argument.According to Ajit Singh Nagar police, Kanuru Venkataswamy and his wife, Polamma—residents of Chittinagar, who earn a living collecting and selling scrap paper and plastic bottles—have six children. Their youngest, Anjamma, is three months old. Polamma was staying at her maternal home in Rajarajeswaripet for post-delivery care. Venkataswamy visited on Friday night when a dispute broke out between the couple.Around 8 pm, Venkataswamy allegedly left the house with the infant. Police said he went to the Budameru bridge and threw the child into the rivulet before fleeing. At about 9:30 pm, a local resident, Bethalam Nagaraju, heard the baby crying, located her in the bushes along the rivulet, and, with help from others, brought her to safety. The child was handed over to the Ajit Singh Nagar police and shifted to a hospital. Her condition is said to be safe.A case has been registered, and police have begun reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and questioning residents to map the suspect’s movements. On Saturday, the child’s mother, Polamma, approached the police station and informed them that her husband took the baby after the argument. She told police she searched through the night at their Chittinagar home and nearby areas before learning a baby was found in the Budameru.With the parents identified, police said they have formed special teams to trace Venkataswamy. Further investigation is underway.
