HYDERABAD: Hyderabad and several districts in Telangana are bracing for cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall, potentially disrupting outdoor festivities, idol installations, and community gatherings for Ganesha Chaturthi on Wednesday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast persistent drizzle and gusty winds of 30-40 km/hour across all five GHMC zones, Charminar, Khairatabad, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, and Serilingampally, prompting caution among residents planning public celebrations.
On Tuesday morning, the city woke to an overcast sky and light drizzle, with weather authorities warning that the cloudy spell could persist for the next 48 hours due to a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast.
According to IMD-Hyderabad head K. Nagaratna, heavy rains are more likely in the eastern districts of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally, while Adilabad, Karimnagar, Mancherial, Medchal, Nirmal, and Jagtial may experience thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds. A yellow alert has been issued for these areas.
Hyderabad is expected to receive mostly drizzle and cloudy skies, while the state remains on a five-day rainfall watch. The IMD has also warned of possible downpours in western and northern districts, including Vikarabad, Wanaparthy, Kamareddy, and Narayanpet.
After a brief dry spell, Telangana’s rainfall status has shifted dramatically — from a 14 per cent surplus recorded on August 18 to a nine per cent deficit as on August 26. The worst-hit districts include Nirmal (–44%), Peddapally (–21%), Jayashankar Bhupalpally (–13%), Nalgonda (–13%), Nizamabad (–12%), among others.
With the low-pressure area expected to intensify over the next two days, officials have advised citizens to avoid waterlogged areas, keep track of weather alerts, and plan festive activities accordingly.
